Is glazed handmade pottery safe in the microwave/ conventional oven?
Q. I have just got a lot of stuff that is very chunky, but I am concerned about the glaze - will it get damaged?
Asked by Ellesar - Fri Feb 22 12:37:35 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You really should ask the artist who made the pottery. Your oven is a relatively low temp compared to the kiln that was used to set the glaze, however the pottery and glaze might be susceptible to thermal shock which could cause the pottery to crack or even explode. My concern with the microwave would be any metal content in the glaze might cause arcing. Another concern would be lead content of the glaze. You need to find out if the glazes are lead-free and food safe. Please contact the artist who made the pots before experimenting. I have stoneware and pottery from several local artists. Some are functional bakeware, some are only good as serving dishes. Others are strictly for display.

How much do chips and cracks really detract from the value of a collectible piece of pottery or glassware?
Q. For example, Roseville pottery or Carnival glass? I have a green glass ice bucket with a Heisey mark on the bottom. It had an almost microscopic "flake" on the top edge and to hear antique dealers and collectors moan about it making the item virtually worthless. Is this true, or are they just looking to get things for an exceptional bargain?

A. good antique collectors will ALWAYS pick away at items to get them cheaper.
