How and why are the Harry Potter books different in the UK and US?
Q. Why do the UK and US version of the Harry Potter books have different covers? Why are there different versions of the book? I know that they change some of the language to make it easier for those in the US to understand (i.e. some Americans don't understand some of the phrases used in the UK) but why do they have to change it? I think it should be printed the same as JKR wrote it no matter where it is released.

A. Some of the changes, as you mentioned, are changes to make the meaning clearer (using "sweater" in place of "jumper," for example.) Those changes are the equivalent of translating into another language. Other changes are made to "dumb down" the books for American readership ("Sorceror's Stone" instead of "Philosopher's Stone.") Those changes are, in my opinion, unnecessary. Personally, I would like it if the changes were kept to a minimum, but Scholastic apparently has enough power to make edits necessary for the U.S. editions.

What should a person read after Harry Potter and His Dark Materials series?
Q. My daughter has really started reading like crazy and I want to keep getting her more books. She has read all of the Harry Potter Series and all of the Golden Compass/His Dark Materials series. What should be the next book?

A. I have answered this question so many times, I decided to dedicate a web site to answer this question. Here it is: Included is a list of only the best sorcery fantasy books, grade reading level, a short review of each book along with a brief summary of adult content. There is also a "Reader's Choice" list of favorite books, and a list of heroine sorcery fantasy books. I hope this helps. Jim,

What is the significance of the half blood prince in Harry potter?
Q. So in the 6th Harry Potter book, the book talks about the Half Blood prince. What does Snape being the half blood prince have to do with anything? How is that relevant to anything else in the series?

A. Well, it brings up the significance of Snape to the entire series. JK creates a new way to look at this character, which she already began in OOTP with Harry slipping into Snape's memories. It also shows that he is Half-blood, something that the Death Eaters would not approve of, but that he was proud of (enough to make it part of his nickname). Also, this nickname allows Harry to look at Snape admiringly for the first time in the series (because he doesn't know it is Snape) showing that Harry and Snape have a bit more in common than anyone could have expected. It shows that we still have much to learn about Snape. In Deathly Hallows, Harry learning Snape's story allows Harry to finally put together all the pieces of the mystery. It allows… [cont.]
