Sea pottery (also known as "sea china" or "sea porcelain" or "beach pottery") is pottery which is broken into worn pieces and shards and found on beaches along oceans or large lakes. Sea pottery has been tumbled and smoothed by the water and sand, creating small pieces of smooth, frosted pottery. It is often collected with more common sea glass by beachcombers.

Origins

Sea pottery originates from pottery, including earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain which breaks into smaller pieces and is smoothed by the acidity and motion of an ocean or lake, the sand or grit polishes the edges like a natural tumbler. Much of the sea pottery in the United States and United Kingdom originated from discarded 18th and 19th century porcelain china made in Europe and America. Before the seventeenth century all porcelain was created in China. Some sea pottery contains discernible patterns, such as flowers, figures, and historic places and scenes, or hallmarks, factory stamps and dates which allow the pottery to be dated using pottery reference guides.

Uses

Sea pottery is often used in household decorations and furnishings as well as jewelry. Some enthusiasts fill jars with sea pottery to display. Sea pottery is sold in various stores. Because most sea pottery originates from turn of the century ceramics (glass and ceramics were used more widely for consumables before plastic) it is becoming increasingly less common to find these pieces now. Individual unusual pieces can fetch good prices and collecting sea pottery has become popular.

A. I am a Greek and when I see someone breaking plates I don't consider him as a follower of any tradition. I see him more like someone who had too much to drink and wants to show off by spending money in a club. Anyway it's not so popular anymore to break plates in clubs. Now they throw flowers, which serves the same purpose: Showing that someone is in an extremely good mood and also that he/she (usually he) doesn't care about money. No one under thirty does that.

beach themed bedroom? help?
Q. hey yall!! I really want to repaint my bedroom with a beach theme. I really hate tacky beach themed bedrooms ex. surfboards on the walls, hawaiian flower pillows, etc. anywayz, i want more of a pottery barn look. my mom is a painter and i want her to paint the sea on the walls. sand is khaki color, and the ocean is going from gray to gray/blue. i want gray to be the prominent color, so i can have frutniture that is light khaki color to match the sand, and my bed clothes will be gray, and i'm thinking pillows with embroidered sea stars. and beach theme accessories, glass with sand it in? tht sort of thing? does this seem good? any suggestions? any pics of beach themed bedrooms tht might match my image??

A. You are on the right track!!! Think gradienting to a bluer sky though or you will have a gloomy look. There is no rule that you can't paint the ceiling blue. Perhaps add a few stars invisable during the day that glow in the dark and mimic the constellations. Non tacky embellishments: There are glass lamps you can fill with starfish shells sand that will pop the look. A galvanized vase with wood cattails and flowers like anise will look sharp in there. a crown (or canopy) at the head of the bed with netting will soften the look. You can even suspend the netting from drift wood. Go solids on the bed so you can add color to the bottom Putting a contrasting blue or khaki throw at the bottom of the bed with a texture (burlap… [cont.]
